Written by the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky, this book reveals an unrelenting picture of the lives of people fighting for their dignity and justice in difficult conditions. The novel takes place in the industrial city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia and follows the life of the main character, Pavel Vlasov, who is an orphan and factory worker. Through his story, Gorky depicts the harsh reality of the working class, poverty, exploitation and social injustice.
