The novel is set in a turbulent period in Montenegrin history, during and after World War II, when significant social and political changes occurred. Through the characters and their destinies, Lalić explores themes such as ideological conflicts, moral dilemmas, and human suffering in the context of the transition from the old to the new social order.

As an "observer's diary", the novel provides a subjective view of events, often through the eyes of the protagonists who observe and analyze the changes around them. This approach allows for a deep understanding of the characters' inner turmoil as they face the uncertainty and challenges of the transitional period.

Lalić's writing style is characterized by rich language and detailed descriptions, which faithfully evoke the atmosphere of the time and place. Through introspective monologues and dialogues, the author explores the complexity of human nature and moral doubts arising from the conflict of traditional values and new ideologies.

"Transitional Period" is a significant work in Lalić's oeuvre, as it provides an authentic depiction of Montenegrin society at a key moment in its history, while at the same time raising universal questions about human nature, identity and adaptation to change.
