The book Mother and Child from 1941, edited by Dr. P. Tomašić, is a comprehensive manual intended to educate mothers and families about proper child care and health preservation.
The book covers a wide range of topics: from preparing for pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, through newborn and infant care, to nutrition, development and upbringing of the child. Special attention is paid to problems such as artificial feeding, care of premature babies and the prevention and treatment of childhood diseases. The segment on raising a young child discusses topics such as reward and punishment, children's lies, independence, illness in the context of upbringing, the influence of the family environment and the importance of maternal love and consistency.
The aim of this manual was to reduce the high infant mortality rate and improve health conditions in rural areas of Croatia. The book is part of a wider effort by the School of Public Health, under the leadership of Dr. Andrija Štampar, to improve public health and hygiene habits of the population through education and enlightenment.
