U beogradskom hotelu, kanadski gost doživljava moždani udar i pada u duboku komu. Dok ga iznose, recepcionar, mladić iz provincije, upisuje njegovo ime u pretraživač i upada u opsesiju: tko je taj nepoznati stranac? Roman se razvija u dva narativna toka – u prvom licu pratimo misli čovjeka u komi, gdje se kroz fragmente sjećanja otkriva život pun egzila, gubitaka i neostvarenih snova; u trećem licu, recepcionar se vezuje uz gosta, istražujući njegovu prošlost kroz dokumente, priče i slučajne susrete. Kao u zrcalima koji se međusobno ogledaju, priče se množe: junaci pripovijedaju jedni drugima, a u tim pričama nastaju nove, gdje se svaki život svodi na jednu rečenicu – jednostavnu, ali duboku.

Jergović, majstor melankolije, stvara bajku o samoći u globaliziranom svijetu: identitet se gubi u migracijama, egzilu i digitalnim tragovima, a psi na jezeru – simboli vjernosti i tuge – lutaju kroz sjećanja.
