Der Roman über Lucrezia Borgia wurde nach den Aufzeichnungen von Bischof Burcardus, dem Kämmerer von Papst Alexander VI., verfasst.

Die Fabel beginnt mit den Vorbereitungen für Lucrezias Hochzeit mit Alfonso, einem Cousin des Königs von Neapel. Die Beziehung zwischen den beiden Brüdern Cesare und Don Juan Borgia wird ebenso geschildert wie Don Juans Ermordung, die Liquidierung Savonarolas, der Pakt mit Frankreich und die Ermordung Alfonsos. Lucrezia und ihr Geliebter sind derweil Opfer von Borgias Intrigen. Der inzestuöse und eifersüchtige Cesare schwört, jeden zu töten, der Lucrezia liebt oder den sie liebt. Zu den dramatischsten Szenen zählt die, in der Lucrezia und Cesare entdecken, dass ihr Sohn noch lebt. Die flüssig erzählte Geschichte endet mit Cesares Niederlage und dem Tod des Papstes, womit die Borgias von der historischen Bühne verschwinden.
