Svemirski trgovci

Frederik Pohl, Cyril M. Kornbluth

Space Traders is a satirical sci-fi dystopia. Advertising expert Mitch Courtenay is assigned to sell the colonization of Venus. He uncovers manipulations, falls into debt bondage, and joins the rebels against corporate tyranny.

Space Traders (1952) is a classic of science fiction and a sharp satire on consumer society. Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth (who collaborated on the Galaxy series as Gravy Planet) depict a 22nd century where advertising agencies (like Fowler Schocken Associates) are more powerful than governments – they determine politics, the economy and people's lives.

The main character Mitchell Courtenay, a top "copy chief" and avid capitalist, gets the biggest job of his career: to convince people that Venus (a poisonous, hellish planet) is a heavenly colonial destination. He uses every manipulation – subliminal advertising, fake news, drugs in food – to sell the dream of emigration. But the plan goes awry: he uncovers a conspiracy against him, is kidnapped, his identity erased and thrown into debt slavery on Venus.

There he faces a brutal reality: consumerism is destroying the Earth, and corporations are suppressing the truth. He joins the "Consies", an underground movement of environmental rebels fighting against the destruction of the planet. The novel follows his transformation from a loyal servant of the system to a revolutionary.

The style is fast, witty, cynical – full of black humor, sharp dialogues and predictions (mass marketing, ecological crisis, corporate power) that are disturbingly relevant today. It is not just SF, but a critique of capitalism and consumerism. Today it is considered one of the most influential novels of the 50s – a must-read for those who like 1984 or Brave New World in advertising packaging.
