Otkrivenje

C. J. Sansom

The Revelation by C.J. Sansom is the fourth novel in the Matthew Shardlake series, set in London in 1543, during the reign of Henry VIII. The suspenseful story full of enigmas will simply mesmerize the reader!

England is torn by religious strife between Catholics and Protestants, and the king balances between factions as he prepares to marry Catherine Parr. Shardlake, a hunchbacked lawyer, faces a personal and professional crisis. His friend Roger Elliard, a lawyer and reformer, is found brutally murdered in a fountain, his body arranged as if in a biblical scene.

Shardlake, with the help of his assistant Barak and his old friend Guy Malton, a physician and former monk, investigates the murder. He soon discovers that Roger's death is part of a series of ritual murders inspired by the Book of Revelation, whose perpetrator is targeting people associated with the Reformation. As he investigates, Shardlake confronts dangerous religious fanaticism, political intrigue, and corruption at the royal court. The case leads him to Bedlam, a notorious asylum, where he interrogates a patient who may know a crucial secret, as well as powerful figures such as Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury.

The novel masterfully blends suspenseful detective fiction with historical atmosphere, depicting the fear and uncertainty of the Reformation. Sansom explores themes of religious extremism, justice, and moral compromise, while Shardlake's search for the truth reveals his inner struggle with faith and loyalty. Revelation is a dark, layered story of fanaticism and humanity in the turbulent 16th century.
