After World War I, a badly wounded American officer Cliff Forrest returns home to New Mexico, almost blind and broken. His father, a wealthy rancher, has died under suspicious circumstances, and the vast ranch has been taken over by his greedy neighbor Lundeen, using dirty legal machinations.
Cliff, rejected by everyone, goes to live alone in the Sierra Madre mountains where he becomes a mysterious "shepherd of Guadalupe" - he guards the flocks and lives as a hermit, slowly regaining his strength and sight. He meets Virginia Lundeen, the beautiful and noble daughter of his enemy, who does not know the true nature of his father's affairs. A deep love is born between them, but the past and family hatred stand in the way.
When Lundeen's men try to drive Cliff off the mountain, a dramatic showdown ensues. Cliff, with the help of loyal friends and his own unwavering justice, uncovers the truth about his father and reclaims his inheritance.
