Građanin pokorni

Ante Tomić

In The Obedient Citizen, Tomić takes us through the tragicomic story of Miljenko Štiglić, an ordinary man from Split, who faces the absurdities of everyday Croatian life. Miljenko works as a municipal clerk, lives with his mother, and struggles with finan

Miljenko's life is routine: work, coffee in a café, football and dreams of a better tomorrow. Everything changes when the municipality sends him on forced "vacation" due to redundancy, leaving him without income. Desperately looking for a way out, Miljenko gets into a series of hilarious situations. He tries to find his way in a world of corruption, petty fraud and bureaucratic entanglements, where everyone only looks out for their own interests. His friends, a motley crew of local characters, bring humor, but also additional complications. Miljenko falls in love with Vesna, a charming but unattainable woman, which further motivates him to change his life. However, every step forward leads him into new troubles, from conflicts with local powerful people to a collision with his own fears. Tomić's sharp humor and sharp satire expose social injustices, but also the warmth of the Dalmatian mentality. The novel is an ode to a small man who, despite defeats, persists in the fight for dignity. Miljenko becomes a symbol of resistance and hope, while Split, with its charm and flaws, comes to life as the main character of this humorous story.
