Novak-Kajzer koristi nježan, ali iskren pripovjedački stil, koji naglašava emocionalnu dubinu i unutarnje borbe glavne junakinje. Učiteljsko okruženje služi kao pozadina za oslikavanje svakodnevnih izazova, ali i kao metafora za Kristinine unutarnje dileme.

Roman se ističe po suptilnom prikazu ženske seksualnosti i emocionalnosti, što je u vrijeme objave bilo inovativno u slovenskoj književnosti. Kroz Kristininu priču, autorica propituje rodne uloge i traži ravnotežu između osobne autonomije i društvenih pritisaka.
