Povijest #8: Humanizam i renesansa: doba otkrića

The eighth volume of the "History of the World" series covers the period of European humanism, the Renaissance, as well as the era of great geographical discoveries that forever changed the course of world history.

Humanism, inspired by the ancient heritage, promoted education, critical thinking and art, with key figures such as Petrarch and Boccaccio. The Renaissance, born in Italy, brought a flourishing of art (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael) and architecture (Brunelleschi), marked by realistic depictions and perspective.

The Age of Discovery was driven by naval expeditions, made possible by technological advances (the compass, the caravel). Columbus discovered America (1492), Vasco da Gama sailed to India, and Magellan circumnavigated the globe, spreading European influence and colonialism. The Reformation, initiated by Luther (1517), caused religious conflicts and a weakening of papal authority. In science, Copernicus revolutionized astronomy with the heliocentric model.

In the Croatian context, the cultural contribution of writers such as Marko Marulić, whose Judith marks the beginning of Croatian Renaissance literature, and the influence of the Venetians on Dalmatia, is emphasized.
