Menschen hatten schon früher Städte gebaut, aber noch nie eine solche Stadt wie Diaspar. Jahrtausende lang schirmte seine schützende Kuppel den schleichenden Verfall und die Gefahr der Außenwelt ab. Einst verfügte es über Kräfte, die die Sterne beherrschten.

Doch dann kamen der Legende nach die Eindringlinge und trieben die Menschheit in diesen letzten Zufluchtsort. Es braucht einen Mann, einen Unique, um Diaspars erdrückende Trägheit zu durchbrechen, die Legende zu zerstören und die wahre Natur der Invasoren zu entdecken.
