Zane Grey's novel The Caravans of the Dead, published in 1929, is a classic work of Wild West literature. Set in 1856, it follows a caravan of settlers traveling from Independence, Missouri, to the West.
The novella was published for the first time in 1961 in the magazine Novij mir and aroused anger among critics, pointing out that it is only "about the narrow, intimate experiences of the heroine".
The novel represents one of Dumas' lesser-known, but still very interesting historical-biographical novels.
