In southern Utah in 1871, young and wealthy rancher Jane Withersteen refuses to marry Mormon elder Eldridge Tull, who actually wants to rob her. Because of this, she becomes the target of church persecution: her herd is driven away, her workers are beaten, and she herself is held captive on her own ranch.
She is helped by the mysterious gunslinger Lassiter, “the last true sage rider” – a man in black who is looking for his sister who was kidnapped by the Mormons many years ago. At the same time, Bern Venters, Jane’s former worker, appears and flees with the masked robber Bess, a wounded girl whom he saves from a gang.
As Lassiter and Jane defend the ranch together in epic shootouts through red canyons, Venters and Bess discover a hidden paradise – the wondrous valley of Surprise Valley, where they fall in love and hide from the world. The novel culminates in a dramatic showdown: Lassiter discovers that Bess is actually his long-abducted sister. To save lives, Lassiter rolls away the massive "Balancing Rock" and closes the entrance to the valley forever, condemning himself and Jane to life in a hidden paradise.
