The Boston Globe calls this book "an idiosyncratic meditation on the moral necessity of preserving a work of art from destructive action", and Le Nouvel Observateur points out that for Kundera, the art of the novel is inextricably linked to the European civilization of "doubt and individual values", thus the fact that the novel " betrayed" a sign that civilization itself is in danger.
It is also important to point out that although it is primarily devoted to literature, in 1996 this book was awarded the Prize of the Society of American Composers as the best book about music.
