Korčulanska brodogradnja / Shipbuilding in Korčula

Dušan Kalogjera

The monograph Korčula Shipbuilding by Dušan Kalogjera explores the rich history of shipbuilding on the island of Korčula, a key center of Adriatic maritime tradition from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The book traces the development of this industry, emphasizing its economic, cultural and technical significance for the island and the entire eastern Adriatic. Kalogjera describes in detail the traditional wooden vessels, including the gajeta, leut and korčulanka, which were crucial for fishing, the transport of cargo and passengers, and the defense of the coastal area. The specificity of Korčula vessels is particularly emphasized, such as their structural features – narrow, low and fast ships adapted to Adriatic conditions. The monograph also analyzes the influence of external factors, such as Venetian and Ottoman domination, on the development of shipbuilding, as well as the transition from rowing-sailing ships to modern technologies in the 19th and 20th centuries. The author emphasizes the role of local craftsmen (caulkers) and their skill in preserving the authenticity of shapes, materials and construction techniques, which contributed to the status of Korčula shipbuilding as part of Croatian cultural heritage. The restoration of traditional vessels, such as the Korčula gajeta and leut, is part of the effort to preserve this heritage, along with projects such as the reconstruction of historic ships. The book also includes illustrations, drawings and historical documents that further illuminate this tradition, emphasizing its significance for the identity of Korčula and Croatian maritime history.
