Tessa Afshar

Tessa Afshar's moving historical-biblical novel from 2015. Follows the biblical story of Rahab of Jericho who, struggling with rejection and the wounds of the past, finds faith, healing and new love.

"Pearl in the Sand" (Croatian edition from 2015) is a moving and award-winning historical novel inspired by biblical motifs by author Tessa Afshar. The work brings an inspired and emotional interpretation of the famous Old Testament story of Rahab, a woman from the ancient city of Jericho whose life was permanently recorded in the legend of the conquest of the Promised Land. The story follows Rahab, a woman marked by severe life wounds, betrayal and rejection, who survives as a prostitute in pagan Jericho. Despite her difficult position and social contempt, Rahab possesses exceptional courage, clarity and a secret longing for a different, purer life. When the Israeli spies arrive in Jericho, Rahab makes a bold decision: she hides them from the city authorities and thus saves her household from the impending destruction of the city, choosing faith in the God of Israel. After the fall of Jericho, Rahab begins a new life among the Israelites, but her struggle with her own sense of worthlessness and the suspicions of those around her is just beginning. Her fate becomes intertwined with Salmon, one of Israel's leading leaders and spies. Through their complex relationship, full of mistrust but also gradual healing, Rahab learns to accept forgiveness, God's love, and her own worth. Written with extraordinary warmth, psychological depth, and historical authenticity, "A Pearl in the Sand" is a beautiful story of hope, redemption, and faith that transforms a discarded "stone" into a precious pearl.
