Lolita u Teheranu

Lolita u Teheranu

Azar Nafisi

In repressive post-revolutionary Iran, a professor gathers seven female students to secretly read forbidden Western classics. Through literature, they seek their own freedom, identity and resistance to tyranny.

Reading Lolita in Tehran is an exceptionally powerful memoir by Azar Nafisi, depicting the lives of women in Tehran during a period of intense political and social upheaval—from the Islamic Revolution of 1979 through the late 1990s. After leaving her university position due to her opposition to the imposition of strict rules—including the mandatory wearing of the hijab—Professor Nafisi gathers seven of her brightest and bravest female students in her own home for a clandestine literary seminar. Every Thursday morning, within the safety of the professor’s living room, these young women shed their black chadors to reveal colorful clothing, sharing their personal stories, dreams, and fears. Together, they analyze masterpieces of Western literature—ranging from Nabokov’s Lolita, Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and James’s Washington Square to the works of Jane Austen. Across four main thematic chapters, the act of reading these classics becomes a form of quiet rebellion, a sanctuary, and a lens through which they examine their own reality under an oppressive regime. The book serves as a moving tribute to the liberating power of art, the bonds of female friendship, and an indomitable desire for personal freedom.
