Breza i druge pripovijetke

Slavko Kolar

When a skilled humorist and a subtle chronicler of the tragedy of the "little man" come together in one storyteller, works of lasting value are created. Reading Kolar, we will often laugh to the point of tears, only to conclude at the end that we have bec

Kolar, known for his realistic approach and social themes, depicts the everyday life of peasants, their customs, beliefs and the challenges they face through these stories.

"Birch" is the most famous story from this collection. The plot follows the fate of a gentle and fragile village girl Janica, who marries Marko Labudan. Despite her gentleness and devotion, Janica falls ill due to the difficult life and lack of attention from her husband. Her death symbolizes the tragic fate of many women of that time, and the birch, as a motif, reflects her beauty and fragility.

"Master of My Body" depicts the life of a peasant who, despite poverty, proudly refuses to sell his body for medical experiments. This story highlights the dignity and pride of a small man faced with injustice and temptations.

"Crisis" deals with the theme of the economic crisis and its impact on the countryside. Through humor and irony, Kolar shows how peasants try to find solutions to their problems, often in unexpected ways.

"We Are for Justice" depicts the struggle of peasants for justice and equality. Through this story, Kolar emphasizes solidarity and togetherness as key values of the rural community.

Kolar's writing style is characterized by simplicity and authenticity, often using dialect to faithfully portray the speech and mentality of his characters. His stories, although sometimes imbued with humor, carry strong social messages and criticize the injustices of society.
