Ivo Režek 1898 - 1979. retrospektivna izložba

Ivanka Reberski, Stanko Špoljarić

Ivo Režek (1898 – 1979) was a Croatian painter, known for his work in the first half of the 20th century, and especially for his works created between the two world wars.

Education and training: He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and then trained in Paris and Vienna. He was influenced by Art Nouveau, Post-Impressionism and New Reality.

Artistic expression: His style oscillates between realism and lyrical expression, with an emphasis on emotional atmosphere. In his later period, he uses darker tones and simplified forms.

Themes:

  • Portraits (often psychologically profound)

  • Social themes – depictions of workers, peasants, poverty

  • Landscapes – often with a nostalgic tone

  • Motifs from everyday life – e.g. cafes, cities, interiors

Exhibitions and awards: He exhibited in many European cities (Paris, Vienna, Prague, Zagreb). He was a recognized artist in the interwar and post-war period, and although he was not always at the center of the Croatian art scene, he was an important figure of modernism.

He also worked as a diplomat: After World War II, he was also a cultural attaché in Paris, which further influenced his contact with the international art scene. Although he was not always at the forefront of Croatian art history, today Ivo Režek is increasingly valued for his consistent and authentic artistic style, as well as for his ability to translate broader social and intimate feelings into visual form.
