Duše robova

Ivan Aralica

Set in 18th-century Dalmatia under Venetian rule, the novel deals with the fates of individuals in the context of feudal relations, social injustices, and the struggle for personal freedom.

The novel follows the story of Luka, a young peasant from the Dalmatian hinterland, whose life reflects the broader social and historical conflicts in 18th-century Dalmatia under Venetian rule. Luka confronts the cruelty of the feudal system, where peasants are almost slaves, subjected to hard labor and the injustices of the powerful. Through his struggle for dignity and freedom, Luka rebels against injustice, seeking alliance and justice. The novel follows his journey through a series of challenges, including conflicts with the authorities, church institutions and other powerful people, and attempts to preserve his family and identity. The action takes place in a small market town, where Luka and his friends face moral and social dilemmas, trying to survive in a world full of injustice and the struggle for freedom. Through Luka's story, Aralica explores themes of rebellion, resistance and the search for justice in the context of an oppressive system.
