Cyrano de Bergerac ist ein romantisches Drama, das im 17. Jahrhundert spielt und dem talentierten und geistreichen Dichter, Soldaten und Schwertkämpfer Cyrano de Bergerac folgt.

Sirano ist für seinen Mut und seine scharfe Zunge bekannt, aber auch für seinen Komplex – er hat eine extrem große Nase, die ihn als unattraktiv erscheinen lässt, und er hat Angst, seine Liebe zu seiner Cousine Roxana zu gestehen.

Roxana ist eine schöne und intelligente junge Frau, in die der junge, gutaussehende Soldat Christian de Neviljet verliebt ist. Christian besitzt weder die Gabe des Sprechens noch die Lese- und Schreibfähigkeiten, die Roxana so schätzt, also hilft ihm Cyrano – er schreibt Briefe und spricht in seinem Namen, wobei er seine eigenen Gefühle verbirgt. Roxana verliebt sich in Christian und glaubt, dass seine Worte ein Beweis großer Spiritualität und Liebe sind.

Während des Krieges wird Christian getötet und Roxana geht in ein Kloster, um um ihre verlorene Liebe zu trauern. Cyrano bleibt ihr Freund und besucht sie jahrelang. Erst auf ihrem Sterbebett, als Cyrano schwer verwundet zu ihrem letzten Treffen erscheint, erkennt Roxana, dass er der wahre Autor der Briefe und die ganze Zeit über ihre wahre Liebe war. Die Erkenntnis kommt jedoch zu spät, denn Cyrano stirbt am Ende der Begegnung.

In „Cyran de Bergerac“ verherrlicht Rostand die Ideale von Liebe, Mut und Ehre und zeichnet eine Figur, die trotz körperlicher Schwächen und der Tragödien des Lebens sich selbst und ihren Gefühlen treu bleibt. Das Drama ist einer der schönsten Ausdrucksformen der französischen Romantik.
