Crni obelisk

Erich Maria Remarque

The Black Obelisk depicts life in Germany after the First World War. Young Ludwig Bodmer tries to find the meaning of life in the midst of poverty, inflation, political unrest and disappointment.

The Black Obelisk is a novel by German writer Erich Maria Remarque, published in 1956. The story is set in Germany in 1923, during a period of severe economic crisis and hyperinflation that followed World War I. The main character Ludwig Bodmer is a former soldier who works in a company that makes and sells tombstones. Every day he faces the absurdities of a society in which money loses value by the hour, while people try to survive in the chaos of poverty, unemployment and political instability.

In addition to work, Ludwig searches for the meaning of life through literature, music and love relationships. A special place in the novel is occupied by Isabelle, a young woman placed in a psychiatric hospital, with whom he develops an unusual and deep relationship. Her honesty and different view of the world encourage Ludwig to reconsider social values, the boundaries between sanity and madness, and his own life choices. Through encounters with friends, war veterans, citizens, and political extremists, the author depicts the moral and social crisis of the Weimar Republic and the gradual strengthening of ideas that would lead to the rise of Nazism.

The novel combines humor, irony, and sadness, showing how people try to preserve dignity and humanity in a time marked by uncertainty and loss. The Black Obelisk is not just the story of one man but also a powerful portrayal of a society that, after the devastation of war, is on the brink of a new catastrophe.
