Sjeverno svjetlo

Archibald Joseph Cronin

A.J. Cronin's novel follows an honest newspaper editor who faces moral dilemmas and the machinations of powerful media corporations in a struggle to preserve his integrity.

The novel Northern Light (1958) by the renowned Scottish author A. J. Cronin is a profound, multi-layered psychological drama featuring strong social commentary; it focuses on the worlds of journalism, ethics, and corporate power. Set in the fictional Scottish town of Tynecastle, the story follows Henry Page, the principled and steadfast editor of the Northern Light—the town's oldest and most respected newspaper. Page views his work as a sacred duty to inform the public truthfully, impartially, and honestly, steadfastly rejecting sensationalism.

However, the plot thickens when a ruthless, wealthy London media mogul decides to take over the paper, aiming to bend it to his own profit-driven interests and political machinations. Faced with massive financial offers on one hand, and threats, blackmail, and dirty tactics from rival media outlets on the other, Henry Page undergoes a severe personal and professional crisis. At the same time, these pressures spill over into his family life, straining his relationships with his loved ones.

Through this gripping narrative, Cronin masterfully explores the conflict between personal integrity and material wealth, raising timeless questions about the price of truth, morality in modern society, and the strength of an individual standing up against a corrupt system.
