Priča o vezirovom slonu

Priča o vezirovom slonu

Ivo Andrić

In this Andrić masterpiece, you open the door to a world where power meets wonder, and fear intertwines with hope! If you like deep emotions, the mysticism of the Orient and the strength of the people, The Story of the Vizier's Elephant is waiting for you

When the gentle vizier Mehmed Ruždi-paša leaves, Travnik trembles in anticipation. Dželaludin-paša, the mysterious lord from Constantinople, arrives, stern and powerful. But he is not alone – with him comes an incredible miracle: a white elephant, a gift from the sultan, a symbol of exoticism and power! Under trumpets and drums, Fil enters the town, causing panic, bowing and whispered curses. The city lives in a fever: who is this monster? Is it a sign of glory or ruin? Evenings full of fairy tales – about an elephant that eats people, carries treasure or carries a curse!

Young Aljo, the brave son of an old family, becomes its faithful guardian. He feeds it, washes it, whispers to it about freedom and distant lands. But the elephant, sad in the cold Bosnian land, languishes without warmth and freedom. He cannot stand the cold, the scarce food, the captivity. Aljo pampers it with tobacco and honey, but the disease comes like darkness. The city whispers: "This is a sign! The end of the vizier is near!" Jalaluddin rules cruelly – taxes, arrests, fear – but the elephant is his crowning glory.

When Phil dies, Konak is plunged into grief. The body is buried in secret, and Alyo weeps as if for a brother. A firman soon arrives: the vizier falls due to intrigues in Constantinople, leaving in disgrace. Years later, a turban is built over his grave, but the folk tale grows like a river! Alyo becomes a hero – the one who killed the elephant to weaken the tyrant, and then himself toppled the vizier's. Phil is not just an animal – he is a mirror of the transience of power, a symbol of resistance and strength of spirit!
