The first part of the book All because of the long nose takes place in a clinic where two women meet, Ruth Czerny, a masseuse who is in the clinic for plastic surgery on her nose, and Lotta Hallsteiner, the wife of a publisher of a giant publishing company. Plastic nose surgery fundamentally changes the life of a young woman, and the destinies of the two women are quite unexpectedly intertwined in the further course of the novel.
