Marijan Jevšovar

Marijan Jevšovar

Nardi Čanić

Marijan Jevšovar (1922 – 1998) was a Croatian painter, one of the key representatives of avant-garde and conceptual art in the second half of the 20th century, and co-founder of the Gorgona art group.

His work is extremely significant because it pushed the boundaries of painting, rejecting conventional forms and exploring silence, minimalism and "nothing" as legitimate artistic categories. Jevšovar's painting is characterized by a systematic reduction of expression - abandoning color, motif, composition, leaving only a trace of gesture and matter. He spoke of his works as a "negation of painting", or the creation of "painterly nothing". He believed that a painting did not have to depict anything - it was enough to "be", as an object and an act. He was one of the founders of the Gorgona group, together with Julij Knifer, Josip Vaništa, Đuro Seder, Ivan Kožarić and others. Gorgona was not a formal group but an intellectual and artistic brotherhood, which resisted academism, the politics of art institutions and the spectacle of art. They published a magazine, corresponded, organized "non-exhibitions" and created art outside the market and career.
