Povijest hrvatske književnosti 1-5

Maja Bošković-Stulli, Divna Zečević, Eduard Hercigonja, Marin Franičević, Franjo Švelec, Rafo Bogišić, Milorad Živančević, Ivo Frangeš, Miroslav Šicel

A classic work of Croatian literary historiography. The edition covers the periods from oral tradition to modernism, emphasizing the interference of oral and written literature, sociological context, aesthetic norms, and European connections.

The first volume, Oral and Folk Literature (Bošković-Stulli, Zečević), explores from the Bašćanska ploča to the 19th century, analyzing genres (epic, lyric, paremiology) and the role of folk tradition in national development (e.g. Kačić, Jarmek). Critics point out the pioneering effort, but also the need for a division into two volumes.

The second volume, Medieval Literature (Hercigonja), conceives the 9th–14th centuries as an independent stylistic formation, examining language, rhythm, genres (prose, poetry) and the Croatian contribution to the Pan-Slavic heritage (e.g. Vinodolski zakonik). Methodological pluralism is praised as a model.

The third volume, From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment (Franičević, Švelec, Bogišić), covers the 16th–18th centuries, with a focus on Renaissance writers (Gundulić, Palmotić, Zoranić) and the Baroque, as well as the Glagolitic heritage. Already as a textbook, criticized for being too large.

The fourth volume, Illyrianism – Realism (Živančević, Frangeš), examines the 19th century: Illyrianism (Gaj, Mažuranić, Preradović) in the context of Romanticism and Pan-Slavism, Realism (Šenoa, Gjalski, Kovačić) through political circumstances (Nagodba) and aesthetics. The methodological difference between positivism and the stylistic approach is emphasized.

The fifth volume Modern literature (Šicel) deals with 1895-1914, the generational movement (Prague, Vienna), authors (Matoš, Nazor, Vidrić) and the relationship between art and politics in the "belle époque". Critics praise the synthesis, but point out the lack of depth in the theory.

The series emphasizes pluralism, but has been criticized for its imbalance and preliminary structure. A pioneering work for the valorization of Croatian literature as a dynamic process.

Viktor Žmegač

Žmegač does not only talk about the visual arts, but about the "spirit" of the era that permeates literature: sensuality, the moment, subjectivity, decorativeness, eroticism, decadence, but also the crisis of identity in the fin-de-siècle atmosphere.
