Priča počinje u 17. veku, kada veštica Dženifer i njen otac budu spaljeni zbog vračanja, a za to krive porodicu Vuli. Pre nego što umru, proklinju muške potomke te porodice – da će uvek imati nesrećne brakove. U moderno doba (tokom radnje romana), Dženiferin duh je oslobođen iz zatočeništva i odlučuje da se osveti poslednjem potomku porodice, Volasu Vuliju, političaru koji se sprema za brak iz interesa. Ona planira da ga zavede i uništi mu život, ali stvari se komplikuju kada se zaista zaljubi u njega. Kako priča odmiče, Dženifer koristi magiju, izaziva haotične i komične situacije, ali se istovremeno suočava sa sopstvenim osećanjima. Sukob između osvete i ljubavi postaje centralna tema romana. Na kraju, kroz niz humorističnih i fantastičnih zapleta, dolazi do raspleta u kojem ljubav pobeđuje kletvu, a priča se završava u duhu romantične komedije.
