The novel depicts the lives of wealthy American families during their summer vacation at the seaside. Behind the seemingly peaceful and luxurious life, there are numerous personal problems, conflicts, and dissatisfactions of the characters.

The plot follows several families staying in a famous summer resort. Through their relationships, the author depicts marital problems, love affairs, conflicts between parents and children, and the search for happiness and meaning in life. The characters try to give the impression of successful and satisfied people, but their insecurities, loneliness, and emotional crises are gradually revealed.
