Smugglers (Krijumčari) is one of the most notable poetry collections by the great Slovenian poet, essayist, and cultural theorist Aleš Debeljak. Consequently, the poet and his figures become "smugglers" striving to carve a path across the boundaries of everyday life, oblivion, and the chaos of transition for these forbidden emotions and memories. Debeljak’s style is strikingly musical, multi-layered, and rich in cultural and historical references. The verses radiate a quiet melancholy, yet also a resistance against the loss of individuality. Smugglers offers a profound, intimate, and aesthetically polished reading experience in which the micro-world of personal relationships and memories stands in contrast to the macro-world of historical upheavals and social alienation.
