Crveno i crno je povijesni i psihološki roman francuskog književnika Stendhala, objavljen 1830. Puni naslov romana je “Crveno i crno, kronika 19. stoljeća”. Protagonist je Julien Sorel. Djelo je bildungsroman koji prati njegovo odrastanje i životni put.
Crveno i crno društvena je kronika o sudbini siromašna ambiciozna mladića u doba Restauracije, u kojoj preciznim klasicističkim stilom te tonom u rasponu od sarkastičnoga do poetskoga izražava romantizmom prožet junakov bunt protiv okoštalih društvenih struktura i morala. To je razvojni roman, kompozicijski razdijeljen u dva dijela promjenom ambijenta (provincija i Pariz). Uglavnom je ispripovijedan iz junakove perspektive, a kadikad se javlja i sveznajući pripovjedač poetološkim (razlaže tzv. estetiku zrcala o romanu kao odrazu društvene zbilje) ili moralističkim komentarima. Junak romana u konačnici postaje žrtvom rascjepa između svoje intimne i javne osobnosti, skrivanja i kultiviranja svojega pravog identiteta (međuigra tih radnji trajna je crta Stendhalovih djela), ne mogavši pomiriti proturječja emocije i ambicije. Ta se dvojnost odražava već naslovom te strukturira nizom narativnih i semantičkih dihotomija (ljubav i smrt, ljubav kao strast i ljubav kao taština, dvije žene u junakovu životu, republika i monarhija, Pariz i provincija, osjećajnost i voluntarizam, istina i laž, akcija i kontemplacija, vojska i crkva).
