John Stuart Mill

John Stuart Mill

John Stuart Mill (London, May 20, 1806 – Avignon, France, May 8, 1873) was a British philosopher, economist, logician, and political thinker, and one of the most important figures of 19th-century liberalism and utilitarianism. His works address individual liberty, social justice, democracy, ethics, and gender equality.

From early childhood, he was educated by his father, the philosopher and historian James Mill, a close associate of Jeremy Bentham. He underwent an exceptionally rigorous education but experienced a profound personal crisis in his youth that prompted him to re-examine his philosophical convictions. Harriet Taylor Mill, whom he married in 1851, played a significant role in his intellectual development.

He spent the greater part of his career working for the British East India Company and served as a Member of Parliament from 1865 to 1868, advocating for the expansion of suffrage and women's equality.

In his work A System of Logic (1843), he elaborated on the principles of inductive reasoning and the scientific method. His book Principles of Political Economy (1848) links economic analysis with issues of social reform.

His most famous work, On Liberty (1859), defends freedom of thought, expression, and individual development. Mill advocates the principle that restricting an individual's freedom is justified in order to prevent harm to others.

In the book Utilitarianism (1861), he develops an ethical theory according to which the morality of actions depends on their contribution to happiness and well-being. His other major works include Considerations on Representative Government (1861), The Subjection of Women (1869), Autobiography (1873), and the posthumously published Three Essays on Religion (1874).

Mill exerted a strong influence on the development of political philosophy, ethics, economics, and democratic theory. His defense of individual rights, education, and social equality remains a significant part of contemporary debates regarding freedom and a just society.
