Dieser Roman hat weitgehend einen autobiografischen Charakter und die Hauptfigur ist Kruno, ein blinder Autor, der über blinde Menschen schreibt.

Im Laufe seines Lebens durchläuft Kruno verschiedene Phasen, darunter die Schulzeit am Institut für die Erziehung blinder Kinder, das Studium der Literatur, die Teilnahme an der nationalen Befreiungsbewegung und die Arbeit im Blindenverband. Stanislav Šarić war neben seiner Tätigkeit als Schriftsteller auch journalistisch tätig und schuf das Zeichensystem für die erste kroatische Braille-Kurzschrift sowie eine spezielle Maschine zur Herstellung von Reliefgemälden und Objekten für Blinde.
