Idile i sjećanja

Ksaver Šandor Đalski

"Idylls and Memories" (1893) is a collection of stories by the Croatian writer Ksaver Šandor Gjalski, known for his portrayal of social situations and the landscape of Hrvatski Zagorje.

"Gjalski most beautifully described the benevolent Zagorje noblemen who saw the forty-eighth, Ban Jelačić and Count Drašković. Of all living Croatian writers, he is the most Croatian, the most typical. Although his observation is realistic, his sensibility is romantic..." - A. G. Matoš

Gjalski, real name Ljubomil Tito Josip Franjo Babić, was a prominent Croatian writer and storyteller, whose work was characterized by romantic and realistic depictions. The collection "Idylls and Memories" consists of prose texts in which Gjalski describes the life of the Croatian nobility in rural Zagorje with a lot of nostalgia and emotion.

With his stories, Gjalski evokes past times, with a special emphasis on the former life of the nobles, whose influence in his time was already on the decline. These stories are a kind of ode to the nobility and their way of life, which is slowly being lost.

The description of Zagorje's nature and landscape plays a major role in the book, often as a symbol of transience and beauty that exists despite social changes. Gjalski uses emotionally charged stories to describe the inner world of his characters, which are characterized by a sense of nostalgia and melancholy due to the disappearance of a world. Although he writes lovingly about the past, through these stories Gjalski subtly criticizes the backwardness and stagnation of the Croatian nobility, which failed to adapt to new social circumstances.

In this collection, Gjalski uses rich, picturesque language and carefully portrays the emotions of the characters, creating a melancholic and touching atmosphere at the same time.
