Najuvjerljiviji dio ovog romana svakako je onaj u Sarajevu, ali i u drugim dijelovima romana Aleksandar Hemon vrtoglavo povezuje zanimljive motive i zapažanja u jedinstvenu romanesknu konstrukciju.

Istovremeno, ova autobiografska mistifikacija u kojoj Hemon pripoveda o životu svog alter ega Jozefa Proneka tematski je u velikoj meri zasnovana na Sarajevu, Bosni i SFR Jugoslaviji, te Jugoslaviji iz vremena kada CNN-u još nije bila zanimljiva.

Pronekovu biografiju u prvom licu pričaju njegovi prijatelji i/ili očevici, a mogu se izdvojiti tri odvojena dela. U prvom narator pripoveda o Pronekovom odrastanju u Sarajevu osamdesetih, u drugom se Pronek kao pripadnik ukrajinske manjine nalazi na stipendiji u Kijevu tokom antidemokratskog puča u Moskvi, a u trećem, Pronek je imigrant u SAD koji prikuplja donacije od kuće do kuće za Greenpeace. Roman se završava borhezijanskim romanom o ruskom „belom” oficiru Jevgeniju Piku i njegovim avanturama u Harbinu i Šangaju početkom veka.
