Kroz živopisne opise industrijske revolucije i socijalnih tenzija, Zola istražuje tamne strane ljudske prirode, korupciju i dehumanizaciju koje proističu iz pohlepe i želje za moći.

“Uspon Rugonovih” je knjiga koja izaziva kontroverze zbog svoje eksplicitnosti i pesimističkog pogleda na ljudsku prirodu. Međutim, ona takođe nudi duboke uvide u društvene probleme i pruža uvid u mehanizme moći i njihov uticaj na pojedinca i društvo.
