Modrice na duši

Modrice na duši

Françoise Sagan

A young woman, in search of meaning, love and excitement, sinks into the boredom, affairs and emotional emptiness of Parisian high society. A typical Sagan world of melancholy and hedonism.

Bruises on the Soul (1972) is a novel by Françoise Sagan, one of the most important French writers of the 20th century. Sagan, known for her early bestsellers such as Bonjour tristesse, continues her signature themes here: emotional emptiness, the boredom of the privileged classes, and the search for authentic feelings in a world of superficiality.

The plot follows a young, intelligent, and disillusioned woman living in Paris. Surrounded by luxury, parties, and superficial relationships, she feels a deep inner emptiness – “bruises on the soul.” The novel is introspective: the protagonist analyzes her love affairs, friendships, and relationships with her family, searching for something that would give her meaning. Sagan masterfully portrays the melancholy of modern man – the one who has everything but feels nothing.

Bruises on the Soul is less cheerful than Sagan’s earlier works, but deeper and more introspective. The book is an important document of the Parisian spirit of the 1970s – a period after the “glorious thirty years”, when disillusionment with consumer society set in. Sagan shows that wealth and freedom do not bring happiness if emotional depth is lacking.
