Narod i zemlja Hrvata

Mladen Lorković

The book The people and land of the Croats by Dr. Mladen Lorković was published in 1939 by Matica hrvatska in Zagreb. The book - in terms of content - succinctly reflects his historiographical education and political orientation.

Mladen Lorković, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the NDH, was with Anta Vokić, the main actor of the failed coup in 1944, whose tendency was to break the NDH with Germany and fight on the side of the Allies against the Germans. The coup failed, and Lorković was liquidated in Lepoglava. The author maintains that the earliest history of Croatia should be placed in the 2nd and 3rd centuries in the area of the Sea of Azov, thereby supporting theories about the Iranian origin of the Croats. In further chapters, he deals with the development of Croatia from the Middle Ages to the rise of Islam, its disintegration from the 15th to the 18th century, and Banska Croatia, Dalmatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. A special chapter talks about Croats outside of historical Croatia. At the end of the book there are political maps and diagrams with statistical data on the population and religions, ending with 1931.

Attached is a map: Croats in historical Croatia (according to the 1931 population census) (map dimensions 52.00 X 52.00 cm).
