Mihail Agejev

A novel with cocaine is a psychological prose in which the narrator Vadim Maslenikov presents his "case" of moral and physical decay during the turbulent years of Russian history. Mihail Ageyev is the pseudonym of Mark Levi.

1.712 / 5.000 The story begins in 1914, when the hero is 16 years old and dreams of a future in which he will be a famous lawyer and a rich man. The entire first chapter, Gymnasium, is dedicated to its formation. At that time, Vadim's character traits are already coming to the fore: he is ashamed of his mother because he is 57 years old, hunched over, gray and wearing a faded fur coat. Describing his colleagues in everyday school life, Vadim Maslenikov at the same time outlines the types that set the tone for the socio-political reality of pre-revolutionary Russia. The second chapter is entitled Sonya and reveals Maslenikov's love affair with an elderly lady, a dissatisfied woman in search of the true values of life, who saw in Vadim a spark of boyish innocence and sincerity. They began to meet intensively, but at the crucial moment, when they were supposed to realize their love, he faked fainting and that was the end of their relationship. Vadim Maslenikov radically portrayed the feeling of rejection in the third chapter, Cocaine. In a completely different environment, in the world of cocaine, among people who are unknown to him, he continues his own search for happiness and meaning. In the fourth chapter, Thoughts, the narrator emerges from a grotesque reflection of reality, from drug addiction madness and a nightmare, where people and situations are set up to warn him of the doom he is rushing towards. Vadim Maslenikov is a weak personality, a split character like Arkady Dolgoruky from F. M. Dostoyevsky's Mladic. Criticism often compared The Novel with Cocaine and the mentioned work by Dostoyevsky, especially the motive of rejecting the mother, then the tendency to intense self-observation, the desire for social affirmation, sympathy for "meek" women and, among other things, the coincidence between the facts of the author's life and the actions of the main characters.
