The main character of the novel, first published in 1928, by this Russian author duo is the endlessly inventive swindler Ostap Bender, who this time is in search of brilliants in one of 12 upholstered chairs scattered throughout the Soviet Union.

With his stories, Ostap Bender talked about a whole series of picturesque figures - bureaucrats, small townspeople, petty thieves, local powerful people, naive conspirators against the government, journalists whose vocabulary is full of postal clubs and phrases, actors on a summer tour, Komsomol women in love, a grandmother witch doctor and several local chess masters inclined to believe that their small town can become the center of the chess world. Ostap outsmarted all these immature opponents in different ways; he instilled fear into some people's bones, squeezed the last clothes out of others, while others he just mocked, took off their masks or broke their hearts...
