Gospoda Glembajevi

Gospoda Glembajevi

Miroslav Krleža

The Glembays is a psychological drama, which Krleža himself said came to Croatian literature 40 years too late.

The characters are truly a key element of this plot. The plot is based on their characterization and actions, and the idea of this work is built on them. The central character of the drama is Leon Glembaj, a middle-aged painter who has tried to escape his own family's curse his entire life. However, his nature made him a true Glembaj, exactly the kind he never wanted to escape. Leon criticizes his family's Glembajism, not noticing that he himself has succumbed to it. He tries to change everything around him and because of that, he himself falls apart. In the end, Leon succumbs to the curse and becomes a murderer, confirming that everyone in his family is either a criminal or a suicide.
