Sveti sakramenti po nauku Katoličke crkve, sv. 1

Ivan Bujanović

The Holy Sacraments According to the Doctrine of the Catholic Church (Volumes I–II) is an important work of Croatian Catholic theology from 1895–1898. The first volume (1895, 525 pages) deals with the sacraments in general, baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist, while the second volume (1898) covers the remaining sacraments (penance, anointing of the sick, orders and marriage).

The author Dr. Ivan Bujanović (1852–1927), professor at the Faculty of Theology in Zagreb, multiple dean and rector of the University of Zagreb (1891/92 and 1903/04), was one of the most prolific Croatian dogmatists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He wrote in the spirit of neo-scholasticism, apologetically and systematically, striving to philosophically establish theological truths. This work represents one of the first systematic presentations of sacramental theology in the Croatian language, intended primarily for theologians, priests and religious education teachers.

The book presents Catholic doctrine of the sacraments as visible signs of invisible grace, explaining in detail their essence, institution by Christ, effects, conditions of validity and fruitfulness, and pastoral practice. Bujanović relies on Holy Scripture, tradition, the Church Fathers, and the conclusions of the Council of Trent, with a critical review of Protestant and modernist views.

The work was published in Zagreb (Printed by the Joint-Stock Printing House), at a time when Croatian theological literature was still strongly influenced by Latin and German. It represents a significant step in the development of Croatian theological expression and education.

Today it is a rare antiquarian edition, valued among historians of theology, church historians, and collectors of older Croatian books. It testifies to the high level of Catholic scholarship in Croatia before the First World War and to the contribution of Ivan Bujanović as a pioneer of systematic dogmatics in the vernacular.
