Narodne pjesme

The collection *Folk Songs*, published by SKD Prosvjeta, brings a selection of Serbian epic poems, especially the Kosovo cycle, and poems about Marko Kraljević and the heroes of the hajduk-uskok tradition, preserving the spirit of oral heritage.

Folk Songs represent a selection of Serbian heroic folk poetry prepared with the intention of offering readers the most famous and artistically valuable examples of oral tradition. The compiler primarily focused on poems that have acquired a special place in the cultural consciousness of the people over time, so the collection is not intended as a scientific critical edition, but as an accessible and representative book for a wider audience. More than a third of the poems belong to the Kosovo cycle, which deals with events before, during and after the Battle of Kosovo, thus opening up space for themes of sacrifice, historical defeat, moral victory and collective memory.

In addition to Kosovo poems, the collection also includes poems about Marko Kraljević, one of the most powerful characters in South Slavic epic, as well as about Uskoks, hajduks and other heroes who embody the ideals of courage, humanity and resistance to injustice. Such a selection shows that the book does not only bring literary texts, but also the value system that folk epics have transmitted for centuries: loyalty to the community, readiness for sacrifice, honor, heroism and faith in freedom.

The language and style of the poems rely on oral tradition, repetitions, formulas and rhythm characteristic of epic singing. The editor emphasizes that the text has been largely retained in its original form, with minor orthographic and punctuation adjustments. This is why the collection has a double value: it is both a literary reading and an important document of cultural history. For today's reader, the book can serve as an introduction to the world of folk epics and to the understanding of historical ideas, myths and ideals that have strongly shaped the Serbian literary and cultural tradition.
