Und ewig singen die Wälder / Das Erbe von Björndal
The saga of the Björndal family follows three generations of Norwegian landowners through love, conflict, inheritance and reconciliation, depicting the strength of family and the unbreakable connection between man and nature.
The book brings together all three novels of the Björndal trilogy: And the Forests Sing Forever (Og bakom synger skogene, 1933), The Wind from the Mountain (Det blåser fra Dauingfjell, 1934) and There Is No Way Around (Ingen vei går utenom, 1935). The story is set in the Norwegian forest regions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and follows several generations of the Björndal family, whose life and identity are inextricably linked to nature, tradition and the family estate.
At the center of the story is Dag Björndal, a strong, proud and just lord who strives to preserve his family's reputation despite long-standing conflicts and prejudices from his surroundings. In the first novel, we learn about his rise, maturation and marriage to Adelheid, which connects two completely different worlds. The second part brings new challenges: family disagreements, raising children, losses and temptations that threaten to disrupt the harmony between family members. The final novel focuses on reconciliation, accepting responsibility, and passing on values to the next generation. The characters gradually come to realize that true inheritance is not just land and wealth, but also honesty, mutual trust, and a willingness to forgive.
Gulbranssen skillfully combines family saga, historical novel, and psychological drama. The forests, mountains, and changing seasons are not just backdrops but symbols of permanence, strength, and the constant renewal of life. The whole leaves a strong impression due to its convincing characters, rich descriptions of Norwegian nature, and timeless themes of love, honor, responsibility, and family togetherness, which is why the Björndal Trilogy is considered one of the most famous works of Norwegian literature.
