Marilyn Durham's novel "The Man Who Caught the Sun" (German edition "Wildes Herz in Wyoming") tells an epic story of the American West in the second half of the 19th century. The plot is set in the vastness of Wyoming, where the lives of settlers, ranchers, seekers of a new beginning, and members of Indian tribes intertwine. The author faithfully depicts a period in which the American frontier was constantly moving westward, and daily life was marked by danger, scarcity, and the struggle for land.

The central character of the novel is a young woman who, after a series of difficult life circumstances, leaves the security of the known world and goes to Wyoming. There she meets a man whose courage, connection with nature, and respect for indigenous peoples are in stark contrast to the prejudices of the society of the time. Their love story develops in parallel with the struggle for survival on the harsh frontier, where every choice can mean life or death.

The supporting characters – pioneers, ranchers, soldiers and members of Indian tribes – also play an important role, presenting different perspectives on the conquest of the West. The author does not present the conflicts one-sidedly, but tries to understand the motives of all sides, which is why the novel goes beyond the classic Western story. The descriptions of the prairies, mountains and rivers of Wyoming are particularly impressive, which transform nature into an almost equal participant in the plot.

Interestingly, Marilyn Durham is known for her thorough historical research of the American West, so the descriptions of the life of the pioneers, customs and relations with indigenous peoples are shaped with great attention to historical detail. It is precisely the combination of historical authenticity, strong characters and emotional plot that makes this novel attractive to fans of historical sagas and literature about the Wild West.
