Fra Martin Nedić

Fra Martin Nedić was the first Bosnian Illyrian, one of the fathers of the Illyrian movement, a leading intellectual of his time, a church diplomat, a Franciscan friar, a builder, an educator, a historian and a writer.

The book "Selected Epic Works" contains the longer epic poem "A Conversation with the Illyrian Fairy in Hercegovina in 1835", which Nedić published in the first year of the development of Illyrianism (1835) and which marks the beginning of Croatian romanticism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There is also the epic poem "The Defeat of the Bašahs, and the Insult of the Nizam in Bosnia", written in octaves, which tells of the pivotal historical events of the 19th century - the defeat of the Janissaries and the introduction of reforms in the Turkish Empire. The book ends with an epic poem in 39 cantos "The War of the Slavic People against the Turks in 1875-1877", in which Fr. Martin Nedić provides a detailed account of the Hercegovinian Uprising.
