The novella was published for the first time in 1961 in the magazine Novij mir and aroused anger among critics, pointing out that it is only "about the narrow, intimate experiences of the heroine".
The book contains selected poems, memoirs, travelogues, and theater criticism by Slavko Batušić, and theater portraits, discussions, notes, and travelogues by Marko Fotez.
The novel takes place in the 19th century, and tells the story of two young friends, the fourteen-year-old Pole Stanislaw and his eight-year-old friend Nel from England, who were kidnapped in Sudan by the rebels of the Muslim priest Mahdi.
