Roman o neimenovanom sladokuscu koji u uvjetima diktature i potpune kontrole pojedinca pokušava održati svoju gurmansku slobodu, kulturu ugađanja osjetilu okusa i želucu, te hedonističku životnu filozofiju. U logici totalitarizma već samo uživanje u jelu i pilu predstvlja anarhistički čin i prijetnju poretku, te se stoga u privatni život ovoga anonimnog činovnika uvlači totalitarna mašinerija i postupno rastače njegovu osobnost. Istrgnuti listovi iz gurmanova intimnog dnevnika tvore svojevrsnu kroniku sukoba individuuma i vlasti. U trenutku kad mu mehanizam vlasti uskraćuje svaku mogućnost djelovanja, te represivnim postupcima i eskaliranom kontrolom poseže u bitne crte njegova značaja dovodeći do negacije posljednjeg uporišta individualne slobode, protagonist se odlučuje na konačni slobodni izbor: dragovoljnu smrt..
