Zlatarovo zlato
Zlatarovo zlato is the first novel by August Šenoa, written in 1871. It is also the first Croatian historical novel, which tells about the history of Zagreb in the sixteenth century (after the Gupceva Peasant's Revolt).
Based on historical facts, it presents a picture of life in Croatia, especially in Zagreb. In it, Šenoa presented a whole gallery of people - nobles, clergy and citizens. The backbone of the novel is made up of the eternal conflicts between the nobility, which is collapsing, and the middle class, which is slowly penetrating and taking over key positions.
